Overview

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Tata Main Hospital is dedicated to women’s health and wellbeing. It provides comprehensive medical treatment for gynaecological problems as well as obstetric services.

The Department has 142 beds for indoor patients (all air-conditioned) which includes a state of the art 22-bedded labour room that is manned round-the-clock for emergency services. The labour room also includes 5 High Dependency Unit beds which caters to high-risk pregnancy and obstetric emergencies, and acts as the resuscitation bay. Epidural analgesia for labour pain has greatly increased patient satisfaction in recent years The Labour Delivery ward is in close proximity to the Emergency operation theatre which provides all emergency services for Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 24 hours a day: (e.g.- Caesarean section, abortion services, ectopic pregnancy or management of antepartum or post-partum bleeding etc ). The Labour Room is supported by a well-equipped nursery which is manned by paediatricians round the clock. There has been a rapid continuous growth of the department both in manpower and surgical expertise to provide the best patient care. The department offers both diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopic services for simple and complex conditions of the pelvic area.

The department is running DNB courses accredited by NBE (National Board of Examinations) for both primary and secondary candidates since 1999. A  total of five primary candidates and five secondary candidates are enrolled for the course yearly from NEET PG. The department runs a robust teaching program consisting of seminars, journal clubs, case discussions, presentations and bed side teaching. The students get good exposure to surgical training. The postgraduates are not only trained for patient management but also take part in mandatory research activities.

Facilities, processes, protocols and patient outcome are under constant peer review by consultants of the department and the institute. There are regular (monthly) meetings to present and discuss difficult cases; morbidity and mortality discussions and interdisciplinary discussions are held whenever necessary for difficult decision making.
